A number of videos have recently popped up on Youtube, clearly revealing that the controversial practice of shark baiting is still going strong in the waters of the Western Cape. Shark baiting (which involves luring sharks with baited rope) is currently legal in South Africa - but nevertheless there are certain regulations governing the practice:
"Local tour operators, who sell the great white shark cage diving "experience", are pictured on the videos breaking regulations by allowing the sharks to grab the baited rope and thrash against tourist-filled cages. According to the law, bait handlers must either snatch the bait away from the shark before it bites or release the rope if the shark manages to grab a hold of the bait"
